Designing PRIVATE ESTATES as
ENDURING WORLDS
Hoffman & Ospina is a design studio specializing in the creation of private estates, family compounds, and legacy properties for clients who view land as cultural inheritance.
Working at the intersection of architecture, landscape, and art, the studio designs land as a coherent, lived environment rather than a collection of outdoor features. Each project is approached as a complete domain, shaped through arrival, procession, privacy, views, and daily life, and composed with the same rigor, proportion, and permanence as architecture itself.
With studios across the West Coast, the Central United States, and the Northeast, Hoffman & Ospina maintains a national and international practice, partnering with private estate owners and families to design landscapes as enduring architectural environments.
Founded as a landscape architecture practice, Hoffman & Ospina brings architectural discipline, horticultural mastery, and cultural fluency to complex, estate-scale projects. The studio collaborates closely with leading architects, interior designers, and art advisors, often operating in the role of estate architect, coordinating land, architecture, and art into a unified whole.
The practice is primarily referral-driven, built on long-standing relationships and a reputation for discretion, clarity, and long-term thinking. Many clients return to Hoffman & Ospina across multiple properties, engaging the studio as a trusted partner in shaping their private worlds.

Our PHILOSOPHY
Landscape as Architecture
We believe landscape is not applied decoration — it is structure, proportion, and spatial hierarchy expressed through land and planting.
Paths are axes. Courts are rooms. Groves are walls. Water is movement. Trees define scale. Materials anchor permanence.
Landscape as Cultural Legacy
An estate should mature with dignity. We select materials and plantings that weather gracefully and reinforce the identity of the property over time.
Our work seeks continuity between past and present — drawing from classical traditions while responding to contemporary life.
Art + Architecture + Land
Many of our projects integrate significant art collections. Sculpture placement, framed views, and curated outdoor environments are composed with the same care as interior galleries.
What Is Estate Landscape Architecture?
Estate Landscape Architecture is the design and long-term planning of landscapes for significant residential properties where land, architecture, and legacy are inseparable.
Unlike traditional garden design, estate landscape architecture considers the entire property as a unified composition — addressing site planning, circulation, architectural integration, cultural context, horticultural strategy, and generational stewardship.
Our Approach
Every estate begins with the land.
We study topography, climate, viewsheds, adjacencies, and architectural intent before establishing a master framework that will guide the estate for decades. Outdoor rooms, axial alignments, garden courts, orchard landscapes, art placements, and arrival sequences are composed with architectural precision.
The Estate Lifecycle
Our work extends beyond installation. We assist clients in shaping properties that evolve over time — planting strategies that mature, trees that anchor identity, materials that weather with dignity, and spatial hierarchies that remain coherent across generations.
